As the number of customers and projects in Europe increased, so did the need of employees. Florian Peterlunger is ForestX’s first employee in mainland Europe.
In recent years, ForestX has had several projects in Austria. As the assignments became more numerous and larger, the need to have someone on site increased.
Florian Peterlunger lives South Tirol, in the Italian Alps, with Austria as his closest neighbor. From here he can easily get to ForestX’s customers in Austria. He’s working as a project manager for Optinex with the customers. In Florian Peterlunger, customers also have someone to speak German with.
– The customers are satisfied, there is always terminology that can be difficult to get right in English. I am close by and can be on site, says Florian Peterlunger.
With a technical/mechanical background, Florian Peterlunger previously worked for a company supplying equipment to the saw and wood industry. There he supported developing the after-sales department.
In parallel with his work at ForestX, Florian Peterlunger is studying industrial engineering and management, and is now aiming to complete his master’s degree in a year and a half.
Taking the step to a Swedish company and becoming the first person on-site for the company in the region can be seen as a bold decision.
– I was impressed by the motivation of the ForestX team. Here I can be part of the development, I can be involved from the beginning and can influence the work and be involved in building the team.
Florian Peterlunger’s work at ForestX is very much about the development of the planning and optimization tool Optinex.
We have weekly meetings with customers where we get feedback and discuss additions and changes. Internally, we also discuss what we can do and what would be interesting and valuable for customers.
The sawmill and forestry industries are large in Austria and the surrounding regions. Half of Austria’s surface is covered by forest, which corresponds to about four million hectares. The Austrian wood industry has an annual production value of EUR 10.4 billion. Together with tourism, the wood industry accounts for the country’s largest foreign exchange earnings. The industry is diversified, ranging from sawmill industry, construction industry, furniture industry, wood and wood composite industry to ski industry.

ForestX has been working with Austrian customers for a long time. Now the company is deepening its involvement in Europe with its first employee in the region.
For several years, ForestX has carried out various projects and collaborated with major forestry and sawmill companies in Europe. Now the involvement in Europe continues with an employee on site.
– It was time for us to take this step. Now our continued expansion and development requires a local presence, says Carl Barck, CEO of ForestX.
Florian Peterlunger is located in South Tirol, in the Italian Alps, with Austria as the closest neighbor. He will work on ForestX’s ongoing projects in Austria.
– We are very pleased that Florian has chosen to join us. We see strong growth in all our markets and this is just the beginning of a larger establishment in Europe, says Carl Barck.
The establishment means that ForestX’s expertise comes closer to both new and old customers in Europe with the same solutions as in Scandinavia. In the business areas of forest and saw, ForestX can offer products together with an industry-specific business knowledge. One third of ForestX’s employees have a forestry background and education and the company cooperates with several well-known product suppliers.
The establishment is a first step in ForestX’s larger investment in Europe.
– We see great opportunities in Europe. We see that digitalization in forestry and sawmills are priority areas for everyone. We have a lot to contribute there; we have extensive experience, and we combine our solutions with deep forestry business expertise.
– Above all, we can also help with how to work and organize around the new tools. This is crucial to the success and profitability of a project, says Carl Barck.

We ended 2022 with a Christmas party at the office in Gothenburg. Mingling, saffron drinks signed by our own Oskar Danielsson and colleagues from all over Sweden getting together.
Several people have joined ForestX during the year, so it was a great opportunity for old and new coworkers to get to know each other.
After a Christmas dinner in town, we returned to the office and music by Gotsoul (http://www.gotsoul.se) into the wee hours.

KingPin project and Sveaskog won in the category “Sustainable Project of the Year” at the CIO Awards 2022. ForestX has developed KingPin together with Sveaskog.
– This is proof that cooperation based on knowledge and trust pays off, says Christer Lindqvist, Marketing Manager at ForestX.
The AI tool KingPin was launched last summer. It trims the timber flow and simplifies the work of planning harvesting through so-called apterig control. The tool was developed in collaboration between Sveaskog, ForestX and Tenfifty. Sveaskog is Sweden’s largest forest owner and is owned by the Swedish government. Sveaskog owns and manages 14% of the country’s forests.
– We have been working with ForestX for several years, and they have a good track record of helping us pick up a project idea and implement it from start to finish, with a good network in the industry and a high level of project management expertise. Tenfifty has no previous experience in forestry, but they understood our needs and our reality very quickly, says Patrik Karlsson, Sveaskog’s Chief Digital Officer (CDO) in a press release.
KingPin uses AI to create a wide range of options to reach the customer’s needs. The end result will be the options that best leverage the ability to deliver climate-smart products. The AI model continues to learn and provide better suggestions the more it is used.
At the CIO Awards 2022, KingPin was the winner in the “Sustainable Project of the Year” category. The opportunities for developing digital support in the forest industries’ sustainability work are great, says Christer Lindqvist:
– We are just at the beginning of developing new and innovative solutions for the Swedish forestry that move the industry into a more climate-smart future.
– New ways of working and digital solutions go hand in hand to make projects like KingPin a success.
“This year’s sustainable projects show that it is not always the biggest efforts that bring the greatest benefits. A small project for modernisation and increased sustainability, where artisanal, traditional knowledge is transferred to a future-proof artificial intelligence. An investment that is paying off handsomely, both for its own operations and for the climate of the world around it. Today and for future generations.”
The win was announced, and the award presented at the Berns Salonger on 12 December 2022.

The KingPin project was a success. The new technology for sustainable forest production and flow planning is now available.
– We are happy to continue developing the solution with new customers, says Christer Lindqvist, Marketing Manager at ForestX.
ForestX has developed KingPin together with Sveaskog. Sveaskog was nominated, and won, with the solution in this year’s CIO Awards in the category Sustainable Project of the Year.
ForestX now sees the opportunity for more forestry companies to increase the precision of forestry production and at the same time make use of the forest raw material in the most sustainable and also profitable way for all parties.
In the wake of ongoing digitalisation, new opportunities are constantly opening up for major gains for forest companies, the environment and future generations.
– How we should use the forest is a hot topic today, and no matter what position is taken in the debate, new technology opens up opportunities that we must exploit, continues Christer Lindqvist, ForestX.
AI has entered the forest in earnest now and completely new information is available. The information can be used to improve a number of areas such as forest production and flow planning.
This is KingPin – What AI can do in forestry
KingPin trims timber flow and simplifies the work of harvest planning through so-called adapting management.
Adapting determines the final value of the forest, but also gives the harvester instructions on how to harvest to meet customer preferences. This is not always straightforward as the value to the forest owner and customer can be conflicting. KingPin uses AI to create a large number of options that provide the best of both worlds, allowing the planner to decide which option is best. The AI model continues to learn and provide better suggestions the more it is used.

Five employees from ForestX India visited Sweden in August and September of 2022 and the ForestX’s headquarters in Göteborg on the west coast of Sweden.
– It’s great that we finally can meet after these pandemic years, says Nikhil Vaidya, CEO of ForestX India. It is valuable that we can work together and learn from each other on site in Sweden.
The team from India worked from ForestX’s headquarters in Gothenburg with their Swedish colleagues during the visit. Visiting from India this time was Nikhil Vaidya, Prasad Patole, Amit Debnath, Pooja Rokade and Ritesh Jaiswal.
At the same time, the Nordic wood exhibition, Trä&teknik, took place literally across the street from the office. The first week ended with a visit to the exhibition for everyone at ForestX.
– It was a great way to talk to people in the industry, visit different exhibitors and learn about the latest in European forestry, says Nikhil Vaidya.
The benefits of the visit to Sweden are many, says Carl Barck, CEO of ForestX:
– The goal is that within a few years, all of our colleagues in India will have the opportunity to come to Sweden and work together. This is a way to get to know each other, exchange experiences and develop a common way of working. Our teams work extremely closely together and our team in India has a unique expertise in development for European forestry. Now that the teams can sit together, we will be even better and will elevate our work, says Carl Barck, CEO of ForestX.
The visit hasn’t just been about work. The team from India has also been invited to visit the homes of their Swedish colleagues.
