HedeDanmark: ”CFHarvest made our work flow completely digitized”

Viborg/Gothenburg

HedeDanmark wanted to get its entire work process digitized. CFHarvest turned out to be the solution for the missing link; the planning and management of the work in the forest. Rasmus Willumsen here tells the story about HedeDanmark’s journey towards a completely digitized work process in the forest.

HedeDanmark is Denmark’s largest private forestry company. Everything from forest seeds to the management of small and large forests owned by private individuals, the state and municipalities is managed within the company. HedeDanmark have 1,000 employees and a turnover of DKK 1.75 billion.

Digitize work in the forest

A couple of years ago, the company wanted to solve the only part of the work process that was not yet digitized, the part of controlling and planning the execution of the work in the forest.

– When there is no central system, people invent their own way of getting it done. We had a lot of manual work, and as soon as there was a change or update on an assignment, it involved even more manual work, says Rasmus Willumsen, business developer at HedeDanmark.

– We thought we should be able to do this better, both for us as a business, for our employees and for our clients.

HedeDanmark analysed what the company needed and demanded of a new system. People working in the practical operation had to specify what the system would be able to do, but they were also allowed to make requests in addition to that.

CFHarvest combined with existing systems

HedeDanmark looked around Europe for solutions and at a trade fair in Germany, Rasmus Willumsen met Trimble. With the help of ForestX, Trimble Forestry’s agent in the Nordic market, they found out that it was CFHarvest that best met HedeDanmark’s requirements.

– We got great help from ForestX, they know both IT and forestry, not all IT companies do.

– Another advantage of CFHarvest was that we could combine it with our existing systems before and after in the process. It is a flexible system. In terms of operations, it has provided a completely digital flow. For the individual in the company, it has provided a much better approach and a calmer way of working, says Rasmus Willumsen.

It was also important in the decision for HedeDanmark to find a large company with well-known systems and good resources to update. The fact that ForestX existed as an industry-savvy partner for Trimble Forestry was also a security for the relatively small Danish company.

Now that the workflow is well established with CFHarvest, Rasmus Willumsen and colleagues see clear advantages:

– In the office we’ve got a good overview. We can see what we have coming up and you get an understanding of what the colleagues workload looks like. We also receive continuous feedback on the status of the work; Has it started? Is it finished? What was done?

– Employees in the forest can see where they will work, their own position on the map and where the boundaries go for felling. They can see what tasks are planned for each one of them.

350 users in HedeDanmark

Another strength Rasmus Willumsen sees in CFHarvest is that HedeDenmark is one of many customers in a system that is used all over the world. With the large number of other users, HedeDanmark can benefit from others’ ideas and suggestions for development.

At present, CFHarvest is used by about 350 people in the work of HedeDanmark, both employees and contractors.

Sven Lundmark: “The customer has to keep a strong position”

Stockholm/Gothenburg

Sven Lundmark joined ForestX with 40 years of experience from the Swedish and international IT industry. He is now part of the company’s new venture ForestXChange.

The combination of long IT experience and through several assignments for the large Swedish forest companies makes the career step to ForestX natural. To be able to work towards a specific industry and get to go deep into it attracted Sven Lundmark.

– The forest is important for Sweden. It is one of the country’s most important business sectors and an industry for the future. At ForestX, I get the opportunity to work on a small scale and work closely with those who make the decisions. And I knew Christer from before!

Creating Stockholm office

Sven Lundmark is based in Stockholm and will be responsible for ForestX’s new office there. There are already 6 people connected to Stockholm.

– The large forest companies have much of their operations in the north and several have their headquarters in Stockholm. We want to be closer to them.

With ForestX headquarters in Gothenburg, however, Sven expects to regularly turn west to work close to his colleagues there.

ForestXChange for change management

Sven Lundmark works with ForestX’s venture in strategy and change management; ForestXChange. The basis for ForestXChange is the need many – maybe all – companies have when it comes to implementing large IT projects and the enormous journey of change at various levels it entails. Add to that the forest industry’s specific requirements for real industry knowledge that ForestX possesses.

Sven Lundmark emphasizes in particular the customer’s task and position through extensive change work.

– The customer must be able to match up in terms of knowledge, and be strong in their role. We and my team make this journey of change all the time and can provide a lot of support.

Tips for successful IT projects

The challenges through an IT project can be many. Here are some of Sven Lundmark’s points of reference for a successful IT project and change work.

  1. Do not rush into the project. Spend time on the preparatory work!
  2. See the suppliers as an asset, have a dialogue with potential suppliers.
  3. The important key person in the projects are often also important in the daily work. Make sure they are available for change work.
  4. The vast majority of the project’s utility values are in the continued management. Plan for it!
  5. We have developed a best practice, and this is what we at ForestXChange apply in our customer projects.

Digitized forest industry in the future

With the pandemic, 2020 was a dizzying and shaky year for many industries. What does Sven Lundmark then predict for the forest industry 2021 and onwards from his standpoint?

– The forest industry has good profitability and has the ability to invest in technology. We are good in Sweden in forest management and we have a net production in the country. The combination of access to good raw materials, economics, investments and research makes the forest industry a long-term winner.

– Digitization will mean a lot. We can automate and have digital support for the work. It is also interesting to develop how to use AI and machine learning in existing processes. It is an exciting technology to use the data you have and find smart and better connections.

Areas where ForestXChange can support its customers

  1. Manage and motivate large and extensive investments.
  2. Create basic conditions for the customer to successfully complete their project.
  3. Ensure the customer’s impact goals and vision for the investment in a new IT solution.
  4. Reduce the risk of exeeded budget and staggered schedules.
  5. Ensure a functioning efficient management and further development of the solution.

ForestXChange offers qualified individuals and teams who work according to well-proven working methods. It can be for a shorter or longer period of time and is available before the project until launching and further management.

Anna Adrup to ForestX: “You have to be proactive about VIOL 3”

Karlskoga/ Gothenburg

In Anna Adrup, ForestX has connected with a person with solid forest experience in combination with IT knowledge. Anna Adrup chose the forest already in high school.

Timber buyer, logistics and business developer can be found on her forestry CV. The foundation was already laid at the high school of natural sciences and further during the education as a forest engineer. Many years at Sveaskog, and then a detour to both consulting companies and government agencies to now return to the forest. With experience from different industries, she sees both similarities and differences with the forest industry.

– I missed the forest and working with business-related issues. I like working with change management in production and logistics. These are the main areas which I have experience from. We work in the classic borderland between business and IT, but I lean more towards business. So it’s great fun to be back and to be on ForestX.

The first assignment for Anna Adrup is to work with the VIOL 3 project at Sveaskog as a business developer. This involves, among other things, formulating the business’s needs to Biometria, whom is developing VIOL 3.

From your professional perspective; what should you keep an eye on in the forest industry in 2021?

– You have to be proactive in the development issues around Biometria and VIOL 3. You have to step forward and be involved and monitor and influence. The question spans so many parts and it is important to network. There are several companies that sit in the same boat, it is important to take the plunge toghether in the issues where we have equal needs and use the networks you have.

Innovative AI projects at Sveaskog linked together at ForestX

Gothenburg

When Sweden’s largest forest owner Sveaskog invests in AI, two projects link up at ForestX. Oskar Selmeryd at ForestX is currently leading two innovative AI projects for the forestry giant.

Swedish Sveaskog funded an AI-forum two and half years ago. Brainstorming gave the forum 27 ideas for developing the use of AI in forestry. Some have been tested and implemented, some will never be tried out and new ideas have been added.

During spring 2021 two projects are in progress where Sveaskog has chosen Finnish company CollectiveCrunch and Gothenburg-based Tenfifty for two pilot projects on how Sveaskog can use and develop AI in the forest. Both of these leading AI companies are also linked as industry specialists and partners to ForestX. When the projects now are underway at Sveaskog, it’s Oskar Selmeryd in his role as project manager at ForestX who’s in charge.

– We contribute with the knowledge between the forestry and the technical, he says. Sveaskog is a good customer to work with. The attitude towards AI is good and it’s exciting that they have a number of concepts they want to try.

Value optimization with a new tool

In the project with Tenfifty and Sveaskog, AI is used to find the optimal point between fulfilling customer requirements and value to provide the right instructions before felling.

– There are tools that provide support in the decision-making process today, but it is a time-consuming process, says Oskar Selmeryd.

There are no ready-made solutions in this project, a completely new tool is being developed. Tenfifty bring the experience and competence in terms of AI to the project, ForestX builds the interface. Through Sveaskog, there is access to data on all types of forest throughout Sweden, necessary to be able to train AI.

The purpose of the project is to develop a new tool for timber value technicians and corresponding professional groups at Sveaskog. They will in turn save time, have access to better quality pin files and have more well-founded options to consider.

– If you look at the longer term, you could get an even higher degree of automation by continuously taking in data from ongoing fellings and make corrections, says Oskar Selmeryd.

Synergy effect with an edge with Tenfifty

From Sveaskog’s point of view, it is of course the large degree of automated calculations that is interesting.

– To be able to do things faster and better, that is the great benefit, says Christer Ranvald, project manager at Sveaskog.

The collaboration with ForestX began early in the process:

– All the regular IT providers also have AI. Together with Christer Lindqvist at ForestX we looked for specialists in AI, and through that we found Tenfifty.

– ForestX knows forestry and can make it into products. Together with Tenfifty, it gives a synergy effect with an edge, says Christer Ranvald at Sveaskog.

In the spring of 2021, work will continue on developing and implementing the tool.

Better forecasts with LindaForest

The project with CollectiveCrunch is based on the company’s product LindaForest. It collects both public and general data such as climate and satellite information, together with customer-specific data on, for example, stands and felling. Together, it provides improved estimates of planned care and outcomes.

– The goal is improved estimates of the forest without having to make field visits. It should provide better outcome forecasts and be time saving. It also provides increased data quality, says Oskar Selmeryd.

The project will be carried out in Sveaskog’s area Södra Norrland and has just started. It will end before the summer of 2021.

Practical applications

AI is a concept that is used generously and the hopes for what AI can solve are high in all industries.

– AI is a term that is sometimes used a little fluffy. Here we work with two practical applications. We’re doing something concrete and value-creating, says Oskar Selmeryd.

Sveaskog

Sveaskog is owned by the Swedish state. The main geographic market is Sweden. Sveaskog owns 14% of forest land in Sweden, spread across the entire country. The forest and its assets are Sveaskog’s core business. Conducting forestry operations and developing new business opportunities and applications for wood raw material, wood products and forest land are a major responsibility. Sustainable development permeates every aspect of Sveaskog’s business.

Sveaskog had sales of SEK 7.209 million in 2019 and in average 807 employees throughout Sweden.

Kevin Toohill, CEO of Trimble Forestry: “The large investments in IT and technology makes Sweden interesting”

Canada / Sweden

Through the collaboration with ForestX, Trimble Forestry will make a long term commitment to the Swedish and Nordic markets.

– It’s amazing how efficient and advanced the Nordic forest industry is, says Kevin Toohill, CEO of Trimble Forestry.

In this interview made in March 2021, he gives his views on the Swedish willingness to invest, talks about adaptation to the Nordic market and what a Finnish sunrise feels like.

Kevin Toohill has previously been responsible for Trimble Forestry in Europe, and during that time he was based in Finland for a year and a half. After that experience and through his continued work in international forestry, he has a firm opinion of the forest industry in the Nordic region:

– It is clear how Nordic forestry always strives for more efficiency, it’s amazing how advanced it is. It is a technically advanced and dynamic region, it is fun to work there!

– I was also impressed how much of an identity the forest and the forest industry have in the Nordics. It is such an important part of culture and the economy. In Canada it is not at all central in the same way, it is a different dynamic, says Kevin Toohill.

Looking for new technology

For the past three years, Swedish ForestX and Trimble Forestry have been collaborating on the Swedish market. Sweden is one of the world’s largest forestry countries, so it is an exciting market from that perspective, says Kevin Toohill.

– But what makes Sweden particularly interesting for Trimble Forestry right now are the large investments in IT and technology that are being made, he continues. This lines up with what we at Trimble have been doing in development and investments. The timing is good, there is a lot of activity in the Swedish market and many are searching for new technology and for replacing old systems.

Kevin Toohill in particular mentions the transition to VIOL3 as a crucial part of entering the Swedish market.

– Everyone, us including, was waiting for the next platform to come, and now it is here with all the opportunities it provides. Now that it’s happening, we’re ready to jump in.

Trimble Forestry provides a product suite with modules for the entire forest industry’s value chain, Connected Forest. There are functions for, among other things, planning, planting, harvesting and transportation.

– Our products are about integrating and optimizing the entire supply chain. The great value lies in a combination of having standard platforms and collaborating with partners such as ForestX to adapt it to the local needs of the market, says Kevin Toohill.

Partner with industrial knowledge

Today, Trimble Forestry operates worldwide. North America, South America, New Zealand and parts of Europe are on the company’s map. Sweden is, as Kevin Toohill puts it, “The next frontier”. And the approach is the same whatever market they enter:

– Take the core of what you have, adapt it to the local market. That’s how we work everywhere, says Kevin Toohill.

– All regions we work in have different systems for integration, reporting and regulations. In Sweden, all three parts are affected and it is more comprehensive and more detailed than in other regions. I see two aspects of it:

  1. The product platform we have is built to be adapted to different systems, it is a requirement all over the world.

  2. The collaboration with ForestX means that we have the local expertise, technical capabilities and the industry knowledge.

– It will be a significant effort, but it’s something we have done before, says Kevin Toohill.

– We will have components and modules that will be very specific to the Swedish market. We provide everything needed to operate locally, but it will still be the same core as in the global platform. It allows us and our customers to save money and we can benefit from the common technology.

Investments and development take place continuously within the Trimble Group.

The entire Trimble Group annually allocates $ 500 million for research and development.

– Trimble Forestry is currently investing over six million dollars annually (over 50 million Swedish kronor), specially in Connected Forest research and development, says Kevin Toohill.

Focus on digitization

The collaboration with ForestX in Sweden is well established after a few years.

– It is an ideal partnership as our areas of expertise and our interests are very well aligned. ForestX is very focused on digitalization and we add platforms and products to the collaboration. What we look forward to now as ForestX grows and expands is that we focus on the products and ForestX is focusing on the customers in Sweden. We’re relying on ForestX to take the knowledge of the Swedish market with us, so that we can develop the products in the right direction.

– This is a deeper partnership than we usually have. In other markets, we have grown organically. Through the collaboration with ForestX, we can scale up faster and act quicker than we could do ourselves. The first three years have been really exciting!

The Finnish sunrise

“What I will always remember from Finland is the sun in all seasons. It is the experience of darkness and light and to see a sunset at midnight, if you can even call it a sunset then.

Then it was the darkness of winter, which I still found comforting in some way.

At one point I was in Helsinki and had just arrived from Stockholm and a meeting with Christer and Carl from ForestX. It was March and I arrived at the tram stop and the sun rose. And I remember very clearly that I could feel it in my face. It was the first time I had seen and felt the sun in months.”

Stefan Jönis joins ForestX

Leksand / Gothenburg

ForestX can add Leksand to the office map.

In Stefan Jönis, the company gets its northernmost located solution architect.

Right now, in these pandemic times, the office is confusingly similar to the family home, and no colleagues are visible either.

– We have to make sure I’ll get some collegues, says Stefan Jönis. I’ll miss having an office with others in the long run …”

Throughout his career, Stefan Jönis has worked for the forest industry. Among other things, he has worked as a system developer, architect, project manager and manager throughout the chain in the paper industry. For a couple of years he was a part of Imano and later Tieto.

Industry with a good future

Now he has become one of the over 35 coworkers at ForestX. He will continue to work as a solution architect for the forest industry.

– It’s fun to join ForestX. I recognize many in the staff and know that they are good at what they do, I know what I’m getting into. It is also an industry with a good future.

From your professional perspective; what should you keep an eye on in the forest industry in 2021?

– AI optimization! We work on a project with Sveaskog on AI. I believe they are the first to do it, and it will strike when everyone can see how valuable it is. (Read more about the AI projects at Sveaskog here)

–  It is also exciting with harvester data and everything you can do with it. One thing is to do yield calculations, it means that you collect all the data from the harvester and break it down into smaller areas. When you then have to harvest an object, you want to be able to predict how much of different logs and assortments will fall out in the felling and this is done by comparing with all other similar surfaces, based on previous felling. It is constantly being filled with data, it will be a statistical AI.

– Harvester data is a fairly unexplored area. You just have to collect data and have a little imagination, then there are as many applications as you like! says Stefan Jönis.

– Working with Christer and Carl from ForestX has been a delight! We’re still early in the process, mapping out how we can best work together and where the opportunities are. Both of our companies are leading in their own niche, which makes this a natural fit for both customers and future expansion.

The appeal of ForestX

Partnering had a big appeal to Remsoft for many reasons, continues Heath. “As a highly established organisation, ForestX has an excellent understanding of the Scandinavian market. Our clients are all on the same journey, and digitalization fits our solutions well.”

Remsoft is excited to further expand the company’s long standing, strategic relationships with industry leaders from around the globe though this alliance, says Heath. “ForestX has a very talented and passionate team, just like us, and our company culture and values merge perfectly.”

In the fine detail of planning and scheduling forestry operations is where million-dollar decisions are made. That’s where Remsoft optimization and operational planning analytics solutions can really help, bringing new efficiency, precision and agility to impact bottom-line performance.”

With Remsoft solutions, ForestX customers can bring critical accuracy and speed to their planning – using technology that combines mathematical optimization modeling, spatial analytics and AI insights to deliver intelligent decision support and deep scenario analysis capabilities – on the desktop and in the cloud.

Heath adds, “Our 25+ years of experience working in forestry has allowed us to help big clients all over the world drive productivity and automate manual processes to meet the complex demands of forest and wood supply chain management.”

Remsoft has over 150 clients all over the world – which means many new business opportunities for ForestX.
